Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, and form into a patty.

Grill the patty for about 4-5 minutes per side, until cooked to desired doneness. Add the cheese slice during the last minute of cooking.

Toast the hamburger bun on the grill for a minute or two.

Assemble the burger: spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun, add the lettuce, tomato, and onion, place the patty with melted cheese on top, and finish with ketchup and pickles if desired. Top with the other half of the bun.
