Classic Shrimp and Grits Recipe

Ingredients
For the grits:
- 1 cup grits stone-ground
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt to taste
For the shrimp:
- 1 pound shrimp peeled and deveined
- 4 slices bacon chopped
- 1 small onion diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the grits:
- In a saucepan, bring water and milk to a boil. Gradually whisk in the grits.1 cup grits, 4 cups water, 1 cup milk
- Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes until thickened.
- Stir in shredded cheddar cheese, butter, and salt to taste. Keep warm.1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 2 tbsp butter, Salt to taste
Cook the shrimp:
- In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.4 slices bacon
- Add diced onion and garlic to the skillet, sauté until translucent.1 small onion, 2 cloves garlic
- Add shrimp to the skillet, cooking until pink and opaque, about 3-4 minutes.1 pound shrimp
- Pour in chicken broth and lemon juice, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.1/2 cup chicken broth, 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Return bacon to the skillet, stirring to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.Salt and pepper to taste
Serve:
- Spoon the creamy grits onto plates. Top with the shrimp and bacon mixture.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.1 tbsp fresh parsley
Notes
For a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce to the shrimp mixture.
