Equipment

  • 9-inch round cake pan (or 8-inch if you prefer a thicker cake)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Spatula
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup water boiling
  • powdered sugar Optional or chocolate frosting for topping

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt

Add Wet Ingredients (Except Water):

  • Add the egg, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth and well combined, about 2-3 minutes using an electric mixer or whisk.
1 large egg, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Add Boiling Water:

  • Gradually stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this ensures a moist cake.
    1/2 cup water

Bake:

  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Cool:

  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frost or Dust with Powdered Sugar:

  • Once cooled, you can either frost the cake with your favorite chocolate frosting or dust it with powdered sugar for a simpler presentation.
