Ingredients
 
 

For the crust:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water warm
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup olive oil

For the filling:

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 pound Italian sausage cooked and crumbled
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions
 

Prepare the crust:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

  • Add flour, cornmeal, salt, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

Prepare the filling:

  • In a skillet, cook the Italian sausage until browned. Remove and drain excess fat.

  • In the same skillet, sauté the diced bell pepper and onion until softened.

Assemble the pizza:

  • Roll out the dough to fit the deep-dish pan. Press the dough into the pan and up the sides.
  • Layer the bottom with shredded mozzarella cheese.

  • Add the cooked sausage, bell pepper, and onion.

  • Pour the crushed tomatoes over the filling. Sprinkle with oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.

  • Top with grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake:

  • Bake for 40-45 minutes until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  • Let the pizza cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Customize the filling with your favorite toppings like mushrooms, olives, or pepperoni.
Letting the pizza cool slightly before slicing helps maintain its structure.
