For the crust:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water warm
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup olive oil

For the filling:

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 pound Italian sausage cooked and crumbled
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions
 

Prepare the crust:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

  • Add flour, cornmeal, salt, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

Prepare the filling:

  • In a skillet, cook the Italian sausage until browned. Remove and drain excess fat.

  • In the same skillet, sauté the diced bell pepper and onion until softened.

Assemble the pizza:

  • Roll out the dough to fit the deep-dish pan. Press the dough into the pan and up the sides.
  • Layer the bottom with shredded mozzarella cheese.

Bake:
