Classic Shepherd’s Pie with Minced Lamb
A classic and hearty shepherd’s pie with a savory filling of minced lamb and vegetables, topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

Ingredients
- 1 lb minced lamb
- 1 large onion finely chopped
- 2 carrots diced
- 1 cup peas
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 4 cups mashed potatoes
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Prepare the filling:
- In a large frying pan, cook the minced lamb over medium heat until browned. Remove the lamb from the pan and set aside.1 lb minced lamb
- In the same pan, add chopped onions, carrots, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are softened.1 large onion, 2 carrots, 2 cloves garlic
- Add the tomato paste and flour to the vegetables, stirring to combine. Cook for a couple of minutes.2 tablespoons tomato paste, 2 tablespoons flour
- Return the browned lamb to the pan, add the peas, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.1 cup peas, 1 cup beef broth, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Prepare the mashed potatoes:
- Boil the potatoes in a large pot until tender. Drain and return to the pot.
- Add butter and milk to the potatoes, and mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt to taste.4 cups mashed potatoes, 4 tablespoons butter, Salt and pepper to taste, 1/2 cup milk
Assemble the shepherd’s pie:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Spread the lamb mixture evenly in a baking dish.
- Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them evenly over the filling. Use a fork to create a decorative pattern on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.
Serve:
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot.Fresh parsley
Notes
For a vegetarian version, substitute the lamb with lentils and use vegetable broth.
