Ingredients
 
 

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground pork
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • 3 large potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 14.5 oz tomatoes diced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

Prepare the Meat Filling:

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.

  • Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.

  • Add the ground meat and cook until browned.

  • Stir in the diced tomatoes, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes.

Layer the Potatoes:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a baking dish and layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom.

  • Spread the meat mixture over the potatoes.
  • Top with the remaining sliced potatoes.

Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

  • Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.

  • Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens.

  • Stir in the nutmeg, grated Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.

Assemble and Bake:

  • Pour the béchamel sauce over the layered potatoes and meat.

  • Allow the moussaka to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a lighter version, you can use ground turkey or chicken.
