Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Large pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Kitchen towel

Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups water warm
  • 1 tablespoon honey optional, for boiling
  • Toppings optional: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

Prepare the dough:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4 cups bread flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 packet active dry yeast, 1 1/2 cups water

Let the dough rise:

  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Shape the bagels:

  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball, then poke a hole through the center with your thumb and stretch to form a bagel shape.

Boil the bagels:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil, adding honey if desired. Boil the bagels in batches for about 1 minute on each side, then transfer to a kitchen towel to drain.
    1 tablespoon honey

Bake the bagels:

  • Place the boiled bagels on a baking sheet. Add toppings if desired by brushing with water and sprinkling on sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
    Toppings

Serve:

  • Allow the bagels to cool slightly before serving with your favorite spread.
